WELSH,
Miriam D.G. 1923-2017

Miriam Welsh passed away peacefully in Delta, BC, with devoted family by her side. Just 10 days short of her 94th birthday, Miriam lived a faith-filled life before going home to be with her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on March 21, 2017. Born in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, Miriam trained as a nurse and midwife in Belfast. She worked there for a number of years before taking a vacation to visit family in Sooke, BC, in 1949. It was there she met the love of her life, Pat and they were married in December, 1950. Miriam worked as a nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Victoria, BC before she and Pat left to live in Ireland. After their first child was born, they returned to Canada and settled for most of their life in Sooke, where Miriam continued working part time as a public health nurse. Her main job however was mothering her four full-of-life children. She also extended her mothering to welcome numerous foster children into the family home. Active in the community and church, Miriam was well-respected and loved by all who crossed her path. Miriam loved deeply and laughed easily with her wonderful Irish lilt. She was beautiful inside and out, living a life full of generosity and grace. She and Pat spent five years at the northern end of Vancouver Island in Port McNeil and Sointula before returning to Sooke and eventually Langford. In 2012, as health declined, she and Pat moved over to Delta, BC to be closer to their two daughters. Predeceased by her loving husband Pat in 2015 as well as by 9 of her 10 siblings, she leaves behind her brother Joe in Ireland, children Clifford (Cathy), Trevor (Linda), Sharon (Dan), Pam (Mike), and John (Karen); nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family expresses its sincere thanks to all the staff at Kin Village Care Home in Delta for their care of Miriam in her last years. A memorial service to celebrate Miriam’s exceptional life will be held on Saturday, April 8 at 1:00 pm at Sands Funeral Home, 317 Goldstream Avenue in Colwood, BC. If desired, donations may be made (in lieu of flowers) to Samaritan’s Purse Canada, The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or Operation Smile.
